専門は実験社会科学（意思決定科学、社会心理学、行動生態学）。ヒトの社会行動のしくみを、 “進化・適応のメタ理論”（亀田・村田 2010「複雑さに挑む社会心理学：適応エージェントしての人間」有斐閣）から研究している。「さまざまな不確実性を人々が社会的にどのように解き、集団としてのメリット（“規模の経済”）を実現し得るのか」という問題意識から、①社会規範や「正義」の概念の成立ちとその行動・認知・神経基盤の検討、②集団での意思決定や協同行為を支える認知・行動アルゴリズムの解明、③他者と関わる心（“共感性”）のしくみの理解、などに関心をもつ。神経科学、経済学、進化生物学、情報学など隣接領域の研究者とのコラボレーションをすることが多く、分野の壁を超えて新技術・新知識を貪欲に取り入れたいと考えている。
